Head Master Rykel Cerezo
From the very beginning, Head Instructor Rykel had always been fascinated by Martial Arts seen in the movies with the likes of Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee & Power Rangers inspiring him to take up Taekwondo in the Philippines at the age of 6. Sparring has been a large part of his Taekwondo Career, competing in countless local and national competitions in the Philippines, prior to migrating to Canada, and even more national and international tournaments afterwards.
His passion for martial arts has allowed him to grow his skills in sparring, poomsae, martial arts tricking, weapons and film-fighting. Recently, he has also had the opportunity to work in the film industry as well as share his knowledge with Canadian Stunt Performers in Taekwondo. With 19+ years of Experience Learning skills as an instructor along the way, instructor Rykel has grown a passion for teaching the next generation of martial artists skills and experiences to help them In their own Martial Arts Journey.
Sensei Raul Urrutia
Sensei Raul have been practicing martial arts since he was 4 years old, Karate Do Shito-Ryu was the first martial art he was introduced to in 1990 in his hometown of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico under sensei Yamato Aleman Okamura.
With continuous training, he began to participate in municipal, state/provincial and national tournaments exceling in both Kata (pattern) and Kumite (sparring) for my age category. By the time he was 14 years old, he received my Shodan (first degree blackbelt) and continued to train and compete at national level.
In Canada, I trained Aikido, Jiujitsu and Muay Thai. In 2018, he began to practice Taekwondo with Evolve Martial Arts and received he first degree black belt in 2019.
Master Byung Joon Chung
Byung Joon Chung, a dedicated Taekwondo practitioner since age 10, proudly holds a 7-dan black belt, embodying the discipline's profound philosophy. An accomplished umpire and referee, he actively contributes to fair play and growth in Taekwondo. During military service, Byung Joon shared his expertise, teaching Taekwondo, and holds a 6-dan black belt in ITF. Certified by Kukkiwon, he practices two Taekwondo styles.
Notable achievements include a 2023 silver medal at the Canadian Open Tournament. Beyond Taekwondo, Byung Joon is a loving husband, an easygoing friend, and a community contributor by donating blood bi-monthly. His journey reflects a well-rounded individual, passionately committed to Taekwondo's essence both within and beyond the training hall.
Instructor Joshua Mak
Instructor Josh has been practicing martial arts since 2014. He enrolled in a Taekwondo school in Port Coquitlam, training there for two years and earning his green belt before moving to Evolve Martial Arts in 2016. It was at Evolve that Instructor Josh further strengthened his passion for martial arts. While he enjoys sparring, he particularly excelled at poomsae, winning two bronze medals in his first two tournaments. His hard work paid off when he achieved his first Dan Black Belt in 2021.
Instructor Josh learned many values from Taekwondo, but the most important one was perseverance. Having suffered a serious leg injury in 2019 and being unable to do any athletic activity for 6 months, he trained harder than ever for the next two years to achieve his Black belt. Instructor Josh began instructing in 2022, and he hopes to train students to great success in their Martial Arts journey while also continuing to improve his own martial arts and teaching skills
Instructor Megan Chung
Taekwondo has had a major impact in shaping not just who Megan is as an athlete but also as a person. She finds the tenets of taekwondo to be very important to grow as an athlete. Learning how to use these skills and mentality to grow helped build her confidence in taekwondo. Training as a taekwondo athlete helped her stay flexible, and build strength and agility. Being a part of the Evolve team helps Megan continue to train as an athlete while being able to share her passion with others. She loves this community and hopes to continue to be a part of it.
Instructor Nathaniel Chung
Being surrounded and heavily influenced by his older brother’s obsession with martial arts, Nathaniel decided to try taekwondo. Beginning at the age of 8, he found taekwondo to be challenging, yet increasingly enjoyable. Attempting to follow in his brother’s footsteps, Nathaniel further developed his techniques and skills. Over time, his progression would allow him to begin sparring and competing in regional tournaments. His improvement would eventually lead him to test for and achieve his Black Belt in 2019.
Driven, Nathaniel seeks to further layer his knowledge and ability in martial arts. With still an extensive amount to learn, his current goal is to grow as an instructor and student.
